On Monday night the Council had a Special Meeting to go into Executive Session to interview the three applicants for the open position of Town Solicitor. The process was continued until the December 16, 2025 Council Meeting. The Council also voted to approve a sewer assessment reduction for the developer of the Coventry Crossings project at the intersection of Nooseneck Rd and Harckney Hill Rd. After much analysis and presentations by multiple department heads the Council voted to approve the reduction which also allows us to begin the plans to update the Woodland Manor pump station which is in desperate need of improvements in the amount of $726k.
The Council also approved a contract with Crossman Engineering to fund the final design and engineering work for the traffic signal at Hopkins Hill Rd at Centre of NE Blvd. This will allow work to continue on the wetlands crossover within the development and be ready for its opening in the spring.
On Tuesday we had our monthly meeting with the Auditor General regarding our audit, the school deficit, and the school contract. We advised him that we ended June 30, 2025 with a $1.9m surplus on the Town side and $1.3m surplus on the School side. We are preparing our deficit reduction plan and hope to get the Teacher and SRP contracts on the agenda at the January 13, 2026 Council meeting.
On Thursday we had another School Building Committee meeting to discuss the results of the RFP that went out on November 14, 2025 for the Fire Protection Renovations at Coventry High School. The one bid we had was from Delta Mechanical Contractors in the amount of $2,894,100 which was approved by the Committee and will be presented to the Town Council at the joint meeting with the School Committee on Tuesday December 16, 2025. The contractor met all of the qualifications and his references were vetted by our OPM.
At the joint meeting on Tuesday the Town and School will also review our 5-year projections, discuss the deficit reduction plan, the debt service on the bond, and local appropriations to the School. There will also be a presentation on school zone cameras.
